New drug for breast cancer could save the lives of more than 1,000 women a year. A study has shown that those with early breast cancer live longer if they switch from the Health Service's standard drug, tamoxifen, to newly-developed treatments.

Siesta cuts risk of heart disease, says study - The Daily Mail 13th February 2007


Taking afternoon naps could dramatically cut your risk of dying from heart disease, say researchers. A regular siesta reduces the chances of heart-related death by one-third among all adults, they found. Workers get an even greater benefit, with a two-thirds reduction in risk.

People in Wales waiting for NHS surgery to treat obesity are dying before their operations take place due to a lack of funding, a surgeon has claimed. The benefits of the £6.8bn upgrade of the NHS IT system risk being overlooked amid the criticisms, experts say. The 10-year IT programme is aimed at linking more than 30,000 GPs in England to nearly 300 hospitals by 2014 and includes electronic medical records.

Doctor's blunder left me in coma - Liverpool Echo 13th February 2007


A 21-YEAR-OLD graduate spent six weeks in a coma after a Merseyside doctor diagnosed her appendicitis as a stomach bug. Her parents believe the case is the latest example of problems with the region's out-of-hours GP service, Urgent Care 24, and have reported their experience to the General Medical Council.

Teenager's eyesight affected by smoking - The Bolton News 13th February 2007


A TEENAGER who has smoked 10 cigarettes each day has quit - because her constant coughing caused the blood vessels in her eyes to burst. Rachel Elder, aged 15, developed a hacking cough last December and has been diagnosed as having suspected asthma.
