Schoolgirl's family to sue NHS 24 - BBC Health News 5th April 2007
The family of an Aberdeen schoolgirl who died of meningitis are to sue the out-of-hours service NHS 24. Shomi Miah, who was 17, died in October 2004 after a nurse at the helpline told her family to give her painkillers because she probably had flu.

New hope for patients who are resistant to HIV drugs - The Times 5th April 2007
A new Aids drug has shown impressive results in patients infected with HIV who had already developed resistance to other drugs. Darunavir, developed by Tibotec Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Janssen-Cilag and marketed as Prezista, outperformed other drugs of a similar type in a head-to-head comparison, and the improvement was sustained for almost a year, according to results taken from a continuing trial.

New drug for HIV 'shows promise' - BBC Health News 5th April 2007
A new drug for HIV has produced highly promising results in trials, when combined with an existing treatment, researchers say. Darunavir was given by a Spanish team to patients with advanced HIV infection, in tandem with a low dose of the current antiretroviral ritonavir.

Eating a Mediterranean diet could help protect children from respiratory allergies and asthma, a study suggests. UK, Greek and Spanish researchers assessed the diet and health of almost 700 children living in rural areas of Crete, where such conditions are rare.

Legionnaire bacteria found in hospital’s tap water - Liverpool Echo 5th April 2007
INVESTIGATORS testing for the source of bacteria after a patient contracted Legionnaires’ Disease have found traces in hospital tap water. Health experts last night stressed Legionnaires was a common occurrence, and there was no risk to patients at Broadgreen Cardiothoracic Centre.

Green light to private health giant - Lancashire Telegraph 4th April 2007
CONTROVERSIAL plans which could see a private health giant take charge of a range of routine operations in East Lancashire have been given the green light. Health watchdogs and GPs have expressed disquiet about proposals which could see South African firm Netcare take responsibility for ear, nose and throat services, general surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedics, rheumatology and urology.

£10m clinics left half empty - Manchester Evening News 5th April 2007
TWO health centres which cost almost £10m are lying half empty because of a row over cleaning contracts. The clinics were built as part of a £20m government scheme to provide four new centres, using private finance arrangements, to replace old surgeries.
